Johanna Richter

Johanna Richter completed her training as a stage dancer at the Iwanson International School of Contemporary Dance in Munich. Concurrently, she studied Theatre and Dance at the LMU in Munich, earning a Master’s degree.

Since then, she has worked as a freelance choreographer and dancer for theatre, film, and television in Germany and abroad. She has been repeatedly invited to participate in international choreographic competitions. On several occasions, she has received funding from the Cultural Department of the City of Munich for the production of full-length dance theatre pieces, which were realized in co-production with the Schauburg and the Residenztheater.

From 2003 to 2017, she was a choreographer at the Schauburg and was invited with her productions to various guest performances both domestically and internationally, as well as to interdisciplinary festivals. These include the “7th Sarajevo Theatre Festival” in 2004, DANCE 2012, “Made in Germany” in Stuttgart 2014, and the “Shakespeare Festival” at the Globe Theatre in Neuss. She has received numerous accolades from critics and the public.

Since 1992, she has been a permanent lecturer at the Otto Falckenberg School of Acting. She has been a member of the Munich choreographers’ association Tanztendenz München e.V. since 1998. In 2009, she founded the artistic sponsorship program, creating dance theatre for students with a migrant background. In 2016, together with Birgitta Trommler, she initiated the “HIER=JETZT” platform for contemporary dance, an initiative for artists that has since been held annually for the young independent dance scene.

Due to her many years of work with actors, she has developed a choreographic style that focuses less on abstract movement material and more on finding the translation of human stories into the body’s movement repertoire. The setting, harmony with other performing arts, the dancing and playful personality with its special characteristics, and the broader narrative arc, which finds its expression in full-length dance theatre, become essential.
