Peter and the Wolf

Music: Sergei Prokofiev

“Peter and the Wolf” is a musical fairy tale that was written in 1936. Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev composed the piece for the Moscow Children’s Theater and wrote the accompanying text.

The musical fairy tale is about Peter, who lives on the edge of the forest with his grandfather and his animals—a cat, a bird, and a duck. Despite his grandfather’s warnings, Peter forgets to close the garden gate one day. The prowling wolf seizes his chance and eats the duck. The wolf would love nothing more than to devour the cat and bird as his main course, and Peter on top of that. But Peter is quicker and climbs up the nearest tree to safety. Because the bird distracts the wolf, Peter manages to free himself and his friends from their predicament and catch the villain with a noose. The wolf survives and is taken to the nearby zoo.

The event will feature several professionals who have been working on gender issues for years. The speaker will be Professor Mariacarla De Giorgi, a musicologist at the University of Salento. Speakers in the debate will include Professor Anna Rita Gabellone, a political scientist, professor of History of European Political Thought, and director of the “Bianca Gelli” Women’s Observatory Study Center; Dr. Serenella Molendini, former National Equality Advisor and President of the CRUIS Association; and Dr. Maria Cristina Solombrino, a teaching manager in the Department of Human and Social Sciences at the University of Salento and President of the Soroptimist International Club of Lecce. The meeting aims to explore the role of music in the context of women’s emancipation, focusing specifically on the figure of Fanny Mendelssohn, to understand how long and difficult the path to women’s emancipation has been and how much work still needs to be done today for a more equal professional world!
